About Strubswoodcrib
The Strub's Woodcrib Story
My name is Pete Strub, owner and sole proprietor of Strub's Woodcrib Ltd.
I started out with humble beginnings, growing up on a farm where having a penny in your pocket made you feel rich. My parents initially had livestock, then transitioned into full-time crop management. Farming was relentless hard work and required many hours, unfortunately, it was dependent on factors one had little control over, such as weather and/or market prices. As a youngster, I was always interested in some type of construction, working with my hands. My grandfather was a carpenter, so it wasn't uncommon to find wood scraps laying around, which gave me the idea to start making things, getting his advice and a lot trial and error. When a task was given to me, I persisted to get it done right. My parents encouraged me to go onto college as farming was a difficult occupation and large corporations were becoming the competition. Because farming instilled a great work ethic, my brother and I both paid for college ourselves, by working part-time after school and weekends, in addition to full time work during summer. 8 years after HS, I began my anesthesia career and worked in various health care institutions for another 35 years before retiring. It was a perfect fit for someone with who was driven to perfection and detail. I have a natural 'engineering and creative mind' so I continued to build things, remodel, and cultivate wood designs all while working in healthcare. I liked to keep simple clean lines and people found them not only attractive, but also durable because I sought precision fits, joints and finish. Several years before retiring from anesthesia, I started a small woodworking business called Strub's Woodcrib. It was then that I discovered exotic woods that had unique colors and grains unlike anything domestic. I began selling items, such as exotic wood mantel clocks and kitchen accessories at a local market. In 2006, I spotted small piece of bamboo at a woodworking retail outlet I frequents, but supply was limited. So I set out and scoured the internet in search of quality bamboo and quickly discovered there were over a thousand varieties of bamboo and companies I purchased it from were not offering a uniform quality. In 2009, I found of a company that sold high quality super-hard Moso bamboo from which I engineered my first end-grained cutting boards. I still have one of the original cutting boards. My wife and I use practically every day, in fact, I bring it along to markets to demonstrate how durable it is. Over the years, I've made improvements in sizes and changed the legs (of my larger boards), to a culinary grade stainless steel and added silicone feet with embedded stainless steel washers, so the screw comes in contact with the washer, rather than the rubber itself, making it last. My cutting boards are not only strong and elegant, but am still using the same specie of bamboo and still purchase from the same company, ensuring quality control at every point. Over the years, I've narrowed my style to 5 popular sizes suited to any budget. This helps keep stock level sustainable for a one person business. My large 13x18 cutting board has become the most popular size, but all the sizes are made of the same quality and have become the most tested and failure proof of any boards I've ever made.
As sole proprietor of Strub's Woodcrib, I handcraft and market only the highest quality kitchen items and sell at the best value. All my designs are original. Today, Strub's Woodcrib creates a number of other exciting kitchen accessories that marry functionality with beauty, like our stunningly beautiful charcuterie trays, shaker sets, bottle stoppers and napkin holders. When time permits, I also make a very unique cribbage board with a built in sliding drawer for holding pegs and cards. Nothing else like it.
